Discovery starts with feedback. You should do your own evaluation, but the more eyes you have on the ministry the better you can identify what is going well and not so well.
Successful people are always evaluating. It is a mindset for improvement.
An evaluation model for Student Ministry would include weekly, seasonal, annual and long term.
Weekly. Create a check in system for weekly evaluation of your programming. An agenda for evaluation would include everything on your Student Ministry schedule. When there are special events, you will need more time and involve more in sharing feedback.
Make notes. Create an action plan that will become bullet points for next week’s evaluation.
Seasonal. Each season in the Student Ministry year is unique. You can be broad in scope and expectation and you can be specific in evaluating results. Seasonal evaluation will help you in your calendar planning and preparation for the next year. Be aggressive in planning ahead based on current feedback.
If you plan it, you can change it. If you don’t plan you risk being caught in a loop of status quo.
Annual. Set aside at least two days every year to put everything under the microscope. In your annual rhythm you will find the best time of year for you to work on this. It will vary for everyone. Find your best time to focus on the next year.
Long term. Every three years put everything under the microscope of evaluation.
One year we literally started with a blank white board and rebuilt our Student Ministry model.
This process takes several weeks and meetings with several Student Ministry groups–students, adult leaders, parents, and others invested in the Student Ministry.
Make notes. Dream big. Take action.
