Facing Challenges in Student Ministry
Our world has become familiar with the hashtag #Strong. A social media world has given us a good way to respond by standing together in challenging times for a certain cause.
If we could take some liberty and expand the use of the Strong hashtag, I think it could be used in the life of a Student Minister.
The calling to work with students is not for the weak of heart. Most know and acknowledge this truth, but no one is exempt from feeling overwhelmed.
Take these thoughts into consideration as you work to stay healthy and strong.
Stand strong but not alone. Take a proactive step to develop relationships with peers, mentors, or counselors. Don’t wait until there are problems before you reach out. Regular meetings will help you build a supportive community for all seasons of ministry.
Rest first, then respond. We are hearing more today about the importance of sleep to our overall health and I approve this message.
Getting consistent rest will not only make you feel better but in times of stress will equip you to face matters objectively. Fatigue is not a good friend. Sabbath is.
Listen to God and others. The operative word is to listen. Let’s face it, a lot of our job is talking. The more we find ourselves talking, the more challenging it will become to listen. Integrate listening into your spiritual formation and daily routine. Someone recently recommended the discipline of listening for 15 minutes a day. This is tough but you can start and work your way to longer periods.
If you are bold enough to try this share your experience. I just started this week. My email is horizon.jerry@gmail.com.
Create some matter of rhythm for your life and ministry. There is something that is natural about having a rhythm. Creating a rhythm will help you gain and keep momentum without wearing you out.
Exercise. I purposely saved this for last knowing that not everyone will read to the end. But if you are here, consider some form of activity both physical and mental that will keep your energy up for the long haul.
As you think on these things and others that you know keep you sharp, you might want to consider joining us for our Table Group conference we call HorizoNEXT. You can learn more or contact us for more information.
